There are a number of funding assistance programs available to assist Metropolitan West School Sport team members to attend Queensland School Sport state championships. For specific information, please visit the websites listed below.

Local Sporting Champions

The Local Sporting Champions program is an Australian Government initiative designed to provide financial assistance for young people aged 12 to 18 years, towards the cost of travel, accommodation, uniforms or equipment when competing, coaching or officiating at an official national sporting organisation endorsed state, national or international sporting championships or a school sport Australia state or national championship. Applications must be submitted prior to the nominated championship commencing.

​Local Para Champions ​

The Local Para Champions program provides financial assistance for competitors aged 12-24 participating in state, national or international championships for athletes with a disability.

If successful, applicants will receive $750-$1000 towards the cost of attending their championships

  • Base Grant: $750
  • Applicants travelling 800km - 1999km to their nominated championships: + $100
  • Applicants travelling internationally or greater than 2000km to their nominated championships: + $200
  • Applicants residing in a rural electorate: + $50

South West Indigenous Network

The South West Indigenous Network (SWIN) pathways program assists Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth (under 18 years) athletes participating in regional and state sporting events. There are 2 levels of individual funding available up to $1,000 per individual, per financial year. Funding is only provided to those who meet certain eligibility criteria and is subject to availability of funds.

Emerging Athletes Pathway

The Emerging Athletes Pathway program aims to foster the development of young athletes and support elite athlete pathways by providing financial assistance to help alleviate the costs associated with attending championship events. The subsidy provides financial assistance through 3 event tiers and supports attendance at specific state, national and international events. Officials (such as coaches, referees and scorers) officiating at eligible events can also apply for assistance if they meet the eligibility criteria. 

Eligible events under the subsidy are the following:

  • ​​must be a Queensland State Championship, Queensland State School Championship, Australian Championship, Australian School Championship, or International Championship
  • must provide a pathway for athletes (e.g. selection to compete at the nationals)​
The following events are not eligible:
  • local or regional championships, training squads and development camps, ongoing seasonal competitions, ongoing series, friendships or invitational events
  • school events that do not lead to pathways for athletes or officials
  • school events where there is an existing non-school event for that age group (the exception is where an event has been nominated by Queensland School Sport or School Sport Australia)
Applications for events held on or after 1 April 2022 will be eligible for the following grant amounts:
  • $500 for state or state school events
  • $600 for national or national school events
  • $800 for international events 

Applications can be submitted prior to the event but can take up to 8 weeks to be processed. Applications can continue to be accepted for events that have been held in the last 6 months. Please check the website to see if you are eligible.

Officials (such as coaches, referees and scorers) attending eligible events can also apply for assistance if they meet the eligibility criteria.

FairPlay vouchers

FairPlay assists children and young people who can least afford or may otherwise benefit from joining a sport or recreation club. Eligible children can apply for a voucher valued up to $150, which can be redeemed at a sport or recreation club that is registered for Get Started vouchers.

​Local council grants

Sport excellence bursaries are available to support developing athletes in Ipswich City Council who are representing Queensland or Australia at a sporting event. A bursary of up to $300 may be provided to eligible athletes.

The Logan City Council Sports Development Program—Travel Assistance Grants cover the direct expenses related to representative sport and are able to be used towards:

  • direct travel and accommodation expenses
  • compulsory competition fees
  • compulsory competition uniforms.

Eligible applicants can apply for up to:

  • $300 for all state and national events
  • $700 for all international events.
